Dark Factor of Personality (D)

The Dark Factor of Personality (D) is a recent breakthrough in personality science. Researchers Moshagen, Hilbig, and Zettler (2018) discovered that all dark traits—narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, egoism, sadism, spitefulness, and others—share a common core: the tendency to maximize one's own utility at the expense of others, accompanied by beliefs that justify these behaviors. This assessment goes beyond measuring individual dark traits to capture the underlying D-factor. A high D-factor doesn't mean you're a 'bad person'—it's a spectrum, and most people have some dark tendencies. Understanding your D-factor can improve self-awareness, help you recognize harmful patterns, and guide personal growth. The D-factor predicts unethical behavior, aggression, and interpersonal exploitation. It's used in research on leadership, criminal psychology, and organizational behavior.
